“Stop being so stubborn, Senpai,” he whispered to himself.
This was the fifth day of his senior’s persistence; Inui had to know when enough was enough, right?
But apparently he didn’t. When Kaidou opened his shoe locker to retrieve the outdoor sneakers, it was full of white cloth instead. On close inspection, they were the right size to be worn as bandanas. His eyebrow ticked. Kaidou grabbed the sneakers and slid them on with full intent to seek the perpetrator out and ask him directly why every bit of space Kaidou owned that could conceal had been invaded.
Inui was washing his face at the student fountain.
Kaidou’s eyes narrowed with purpose. “Senpai,” he throated. This time he’d do it, this time Inui would understand and the gift-bombing would cease.
The senior slid the frames into place with practiced ease. And then he did something completely unexpected – Inui grinned.
“Oi. Kaidou. I see you haven’t accepted a single one of my treats yet?”
This was beyond bizarre. “Senpai. Why are you doing… this.” He held out a white square of fabric illustratively. “I don’t…”
“You don’t understand?”
“….iia.” Leave it to Inui to make him feel stupid. As always.
“What day was Monday, Kaidou.”
Obviously, it had been the fourteenth. “But what does that matter, Senpai,” he asked, but immediately it came together in his mind.
March 14th was White Day.
Kaidou remembered the day clearly: assuming chocolate would invalidate months of hard training, passed his Valentine’s chocolate on to Inui. Hadn’t he explained properly? Or did Inui think it was a personal gift?
Cheeks got hot, and his words ran thin. “It’s not like…”
Inui’s grin widened. “Humor me, Kaidou.”
Something in the framing of the request was different than a normal request. Something told him his Senpai’s eyes were twinkling slightly. And something made Kaidou’s mouth stretch and pull upward slightly.
“Humor you?”
“Aah.”
“And this will make you stop?”
“…Most likely.”
“Will it make you happy?”
“Quite.”
“And you’ll finish this?”
“Indeed.”
“…fine.”
Kaidou gave the scrap of fabric a good look. He turned around, facing away from Inui, then pulled the green bandana from his head and tied the white one in a familiar knot over his hair.
He spun back around to face his tormentor.
Kaidou’s rough voice held a faint note of amusement. “And does this satisfy you, Inu-chama?”
And, to the untrained eye, Inui’s face had softened into a rare, genuine smile, and he let forth a small sound that could have been mistaken for a chuckle.
“Exceedingly - thank you, Kaidou.”
His thin eyebrow twitched once more for good measure, but the white bandana stayed on for the rest of practice.
